Dr Linda Papadopoulos on long distance relationships
New research suggests that long-distance relationships in the UK often struggle to last. A study from Trainline has found that more than half ended within a year, with financial costs, emotional strain, and the effort of planning trips cited as key reasons. One in three relationships ended within six months, and 43% of singles said they would hesitate to start a relationship involving distance.
Ahead of Valentine’s Day, Trainline has teamed up with leading media psychologist, Dr Linda Papadopoulos, to offer advice for couples navigating long-distance relationships. Her guidance includes planning visits in advance to create anticipation and potentially reduce costs. She also emphasises the importance of communication, encouraging couples to set aside dedicated time for conversations.
Small gestures, such as handwritten notes or shared playlists, can strengthen the connection. Dr Papadopoulos also highlights the value of maintaining relationships with friends and family for emotional support. By using technology to bridge the gap and making travel part of the experience, couples can improve their chances of lasting the distance.
