Dr Zoe Williams on the simple life that makes us happy

There’s a good reason why the term “a spring in your step” is used to describe someone who feels happy. As we discard the oversized hoodie blankets and slowly emerge from our self-imposed hibernation, spring signals the end of cold dark nights – evoking rejuvenation with the promise of sunnier days ahead. And now new research shows the small indulgences that make us happiness… often don’t cost a penny.

A new study by Lindt, to mark the beginning of Spring, reveals the everyday things that bring us joy and lift our spirits. Getting a good night’s sleep (51%) has the greatest impact on our happiness, while taking a walk on a sunny morning (48%), and receiving a hug (47%) also top the list.

Indeed, life’s greatest pleasures don’t need to break the bank as the research suggests spending time with friends and family (46%), enjoying a beautiful view (43%), sleeping in freshly washed sheets (42%) and stroking a pet (39%) all boost our moods. Food features heavily with eating chocolate (37%), cooking your favourite meal (33%), eating cake (30%), a Sunday roast with friends (29%) and freshly brewed coffee (27%) all making an appearance.
