F1 update – Australian GP

The third round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship took the teams and drivers to the land down under in Albert Park, Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix which was very chaotic as it saw 3 red flags the most in the sports history for 1 Grand Prix

Red Bull’s reigning world champion Max Verstappen took his second victory of the year heading home Mercedes Lewis Hamilton with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso completing the podium by finishing third.

Australian GP top 5:

  • 1st: Max Verstappen – Red Bull
  • 2nd: Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
  • 3rd: Fernando Alonso – Aston Martin
  • 4th: Lance Stroll – Aston Martin
  • 5th: Sergio Perez – Red Bull

Other highlights:

  • Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll scored his best result since 2020 by finishing fourth.
  • Red Bull’s Sergio Perez put in the driver of the day performance by finishing fifth despite starting from the pitlane, he would score a point for fastest lap as well.
  • McLaren scored their first points of the year with Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri finishing sixth & eighth respectively, the latter it was their first ever points in Formula 1.
  • Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg scored his first points since 2020.
  • Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu and Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda scored their first points of the year, the latter it’s the teams first points of the year.
  • Ferrari had a bad day at the office as Carlos Sainz initially finished fourth on the road, but was hit with a 5 second time penalty for colliding with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso on lap 57 that ultimately caused the third red flag of the race which took out both Alpine’s (Pierre Gasly & Esteban Ocon), Alpha Tauri’s Nyck De Vries and William’s Logan Sargeant, whislt his teammate Charles Leclerc would retire on the opening lap.
  • William’s Alexander Albon bought out the first red flag by crashing out on lap 7.
  • Mercedes George Russell would retire on lap 18 with an engine failure.
  • Haas’s Kevin Magnussen bought out the second flag after crashing out on lap 53.

The next round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship will be held on the streets of Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 28th – 30th April.
