F1 update – Austrian GP
Round 11 of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship was held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Lando Norris took his third victory of the year leading a McLaren 1 – 2 fending off his team mate Oscar Piastri who had to settle for second with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completing the podium in third.
Austrian GP – top 5:
- 1st: Lando Norris – McLaren
- 2nd: Oscar Piastri – McLaren
- 3rd: Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
- 4th: Sir Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari
- 5th: George Russell – Mercedes
Other highlights:
- Williams endure a tough weekend as both their drivers Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon both retired from the race. Sainz failed to start as his brakes caught fire in the pits before the start of the race, whilst Albon retired on lap 16 due to an engine failure.
- Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes driver Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli collided at turn 3 on the opening lap which ended both their races on the spot. The incident bought out the safety car.
- Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto collided on lap 31 at turn 4, both were able to keep going, but Tsunoda was given a 10 second time penalty for causing the collision.
- McLaren’s Oscar Piastri nearly collided with Alpine’s Franco Colapinto on lap 54 which resulted in Colapinto recieving a 5 second time penalty for forcing another driver off the track.
- Sauber enjoyed their best weekend since Qatar 2023 as both their drivers Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg scored valuable points. For Bortoleto it was his ever points in Formula 1 whilst his team mate Hulkenberg started from the back of the grid to finish in ninth.
- Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson scored his best finish of his Formula 1 career by finishing in sixth place.
News:
- Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur missed the Austrian Grand Prix due to personal reasons with deputy team boss Jerome D’Ambrosio taking the reins.
- Former Ferrari chair Luca Di Montezemolo has become the new director of McLaren.
- The Hungaroring in Hungary has had a revamp of it’s grandstand and pitlane ahead of hosting the Hungarian Grand Prix later this year.
- Aston Martin have announced the signing of Giles Wood from Red Bull as their new director of simulation and modelling.
- After causing the collision with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on the openig lap of the Austrian Grand Prix, Mercedes driver Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli has recieved a 3 place grid penalty for the British Grand Prix.
The next round of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the famous Silverstone Circuit in Northampton, England for the British Grand Prix on 4th to 6th July.
