F1 update – British GP

Round 12 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship was held at the legendary Silverstone Circuit in Northampton, England for the British Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver Sir Lewis Hamilton ended his 56 race winless streak by taking his first victory of the year and his first since Saudi Arabia 2021, it was also his ninth victory at the British Grand Prix (his home race). The 7 time world champion headed home Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with McLaren’s Lando Norris finished third making it 2 British drivers on the podium in what was a dry-wet-dry-wet-dry race.

British GP – top 5:

  • 1st: Sir Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
  • 2nd: Max Verstappen – Red Bull
  • 3rd: Lando Norris – McLaren
  • 4th: Oscar Piastri – McLaren
  • 5th: Carlos Sainz – Ferrari

Other Highlights:

  • Mercedes driver George Russell started the race on pole position for his home race, but on lap 34 he would retire from the race with water pressure problems.
  • Alpine’s Pierre Gasly would not make the start of the race as his car had gearbox problem.
  • Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg had a brilliant weekend qualifying and finishing the race in sixth place.
  • Red Bull’s Sergio Perez would start the race from the pitlane due to unapproved changes to his car, the Mexican would end up finishing in seventeenth place after changing tyres at the wrong time.
  • Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc would also fall foul of changing tyres at the wrong time and would eventually finish the race in fourteenth place.

News:

  • Haas announced that Ferrari Academy driver from Chelmsford Oliver Bearman will race for the team full time in 2025.
  • The trailer dropped for a new F1 film which will star Academy Award winning actor Brad Pitt.
  • Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad became the first driver since Antonio Felix da Costa to win both races of an GP3/F3 weekend.
  • Liam Lawson is to test a Red Bull car in the coming days.
  • Aston Martin announced that Enrico Cardile will leave Ferrari to join Aston Martin in 2025 as their new chief technical offier.

The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will take place at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary for the Hungarian Grand Prix on 19th to 21st July.
