F1 update – Las Vegas GP
Round 22 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship was held on the Las Vegas Strip Circuit for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
It was dominant weekend for Mercedes as George Russell led home team mate Sir Lewis Hamilton to claim his second victory of the year, third place went the way of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, whilst fifth place was enough for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to claim his fourth world drivers title.
Las Vegas GP – top 5:
- 1st: George Russell – Mercedes
- 2nd: Sir Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
- 3rd: Carlos Sainz – Ferrari
- 4th: Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
- 5th: Max Verstappen – Red Bull
Other highlights:
- Alpine’s Pierre Gasly would retire on lap 16 with engine failure.
- Williams’s Alexander Albon would retire on lap 27 with overheating issues on his car.
- McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was given a 5 second time penalty for being out of position on the grid which he served during his first pit stop.
News:
- Formula 1 will have an eleventh team in 2026 in the form of American car brand Cadillac back by motoring giants General Motors.
- Dan Fallows has announced that he will step down as technical director at Aston Martin, but will remain with the team in a different role.
- F1 race director Niels Wittich stepped down from his role after the Brazilian Grand Prix and is now replaced by Formula 2 and Formula 3 race director Rui Marques from the Las Vegas Grand Prix onwards.
- Formula 1 announced a partnership with chocolate brand Nestle to have KitKat as it’s official chocolate bar on a multi year deal commencing in 2025.
The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the Lusail Circuit in Qatar for the Qatar Grand Prix on 29th November to 1st December.
