F1 update – Mexican GP

Round 20 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship was held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit in Mexico City, Mexico for the Mexican Grand Prix.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz drove a faultless race to clinch his second victory of the year heading home McLaren’s Lando Norris whilst Sainz’s Ferrari team mate Charles Leclerc finished third.

Mexican GP – top 5:

  • 1st: Carlos Sainz – Ferrari
  • 2nd: Lando Norris – McLaren
  • 3rd: Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
  • 4th: Sir Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
  • 5th: George Russell – Mercedes

Other highlights:

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was a 10 second time penalty for forcing Lando Norris off the track at turn 4 on lap 10, he was also given a further 10 second time penalty for leaving the gaining an advantage on the same lap. He would eventually finish the race in sixth.
  • Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was given a 5 second time penalty for a false start, he would eventually finish the race in seventeenth.
  • Williams’s Franco Colapinto was given a 10 second penalty for colliding with RB’s Liam Lawson late in the race although the time penalty did not effect his finishing position of twelfth.
  • RB’s Yuki Tsunoda and Williams’s Alexander Albon would both retire on the opening lap after colliding at the very first corner, the incident bought out the safety car.
  • Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso would retire on lap 16 with brake failure.
  • McLaren’s Oscar Piastri started the race from seventeenth and would finish the race in eighth.

News:

  • Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso celebrated his fourhundreth Grand Prix weekend.
  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen recieved 4 points on his FIA licence following his penalties recieved at the Mexican Grand Prix.
  • Sauber’s young driver Robert Shwartzman was handed a 5 place grid penalty for overtaking under double waved yellow flags during practice for the Mexican Grand Prix. Under FIA rules he can only serve the penalty when he races in F1.

The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the Interlagos Circuit in Sao Paolo, Brazil for the Brazilian Grand Prix on 1st to 3rd November.
