F1 update – Miami GP

Round 6 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship was at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami, Florida for the Miami Grand Prix.

McLaren’s Lando Norris took his maiden Grand Prix victory by heading home Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completing the podium in third.

Miami GP – top 5:

  • 1st: Lando Norris – McLaren
  • 2nd: Max Verstappen – Red Bull
  • 3rd: Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
  • 4th: Sergio Perez – Red Bull
  • 5th: Carlos Sainz – Ferrari

Other highlights:

  • Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was handed a 5 second time penalty post race for his collision that resulted in McLaren’s Oscar Piastri having damage to his front wing.
  • Haas’s Kevin Magnussen collided with Williams’s Logan Sargeant on lap 28 which saw the latter retire which bought out the safety car. Magnussen was given a 10 second time penalty for his role in the collision which later turned to 25 as he failed to serve his penalty correctly.
  • Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll was given a 10 second time penalty for overtaking Williams’s Alexander Albon by going off the track.
  • Alpine’s Esteban Ocon scored his and the teams first points finish of the year with a tenth place finish.

News:

  • Red Bull designer Adrian Newey is to leave the team in early 2025.
  • Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg will leave the team and drive for Sauber in 2025 before it’s switch to Audi.
  • Alpine appointed David Sanchez as it’s new executive technical director.
  • Britian’s Alpine backed driver Abbi Pulling took both victories in the F1 Academy meeting in Miami, in race 1 she headed home Mercedes backed driver Doriane Pin with Haas backed driver Chloe Chambers in third, whilst in race 2 Pulling headed home McLaren backed driver Bianca Bustamante with Mercedes backed driver Doriane Pin third.

The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari Circuit in Imola, Italy for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on 17th to 19th May.
