F1 update – US GP
Round 19 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship was held at the Circuit Of The America’s in Austin, Texas for the United States Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took his third victory of the year heading home Ferrari team mate Carlos Sainz who finished second with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen controversally finishing third even though he finished behind McLaren’s Lando Norris on the track.
US GP – top 5:
- 1st: Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
- 2nd: Carlos Sainz – Ferrari
- 3rd: Max Verstappen – Red Bull
- 4th: Lando Norris – McLaren
- 5th: Oscar Piastri – McLaren
Other highlights:
- McLaren’s Lando Norris was given a 5 second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage despite being forced off by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was also given the same penalty for the same reason as Norris.
- RB’s Yuki Tsunoda was also given a 5 second time penalty again for forcing the Williams of Alexander off the track. Mercedes driver George Russell was also given the same penalty as Tsunoda for forcing the Sauber of Valtteri Bottas off the track. The latter would then finish the race in sixth after starting from the pitlane.
- Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton suffered an early retirement by spinning out on lap 2.
- RB’s Liam Lawson put in a steller drive on his return to finish ninth after starting from nineteenth.
- William’s Franco Colapinto continued his fine form with the team by finishing in tenth.
- The sprint race on Saturday saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen take victory ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and the McLaren of Lando Norris.
News:
- RB announced that Liam Lawson would replace Daniel Ricciardo for the rest of the season.
- The point for fastest lap will be dropped after the 2024 season.
The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit in Mexico City, Mexico for the Mexican Grand Prix on 25th to 27th October.
