Five-a-day under fire with top nutritionists calling for a revamp

A new study has found almost a fifth (18 per cent) rarely or never achieve their five portions a day.

While the same percentage don’t even know exactly which foods count towards this quota.

28 per cent have ‘convinced themselves’ a food item does count towards it, because it was something they wanted to eat.

The study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Whitworths, also found that a third (34 per cent) of those who don’t buy into five-a-day also believe the recommended amounts of these foods are ‘exaggerated’ and more than a quarter (27 per cent) don’t think it would have a significant impact on health.
