Motorsport Update – 10th May

The Motorsporting Circus was packed full of exciting action last weekend. Races included: F1 headed to the Circuit De Catalunya for the Spanish GP, Formula E visited Monaco for the Monaco E-Prix and the BTCC kicked off the 2021 season at the high speed Thruxton.

F1 Spanish GP:

  • 1st: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
  • 2nd: Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
  • 3rd: Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes)
  • 4th: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
  • 5th: Sergio Perez (Red Bull)

Highlights:

  • Mercedes Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish GP after making a late pitstop for fresh tyres as he overtook Red Bull’s Max Verstappen into turn 1,
  • Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda retired at the newly configured turn 10,
  • Both Aston Martin’s of Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll failed to finish in the points after missing out on getting into qualiying 3,
  • Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly finished in the 10th to claim the final point for Alpha Tauri after starting 12th on the grid.

Formula E Monaco E-Prix:

Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Antonio Felix Da Costa (DS Techeetah)
  • 2nd: Robin Frijns (Virgin)
  • 3rd: Mitch Evans (Jaguar)

Highlights:

  • An opening lap Collision down at the turn 6 hairpin saw 1 driver eliminated with Mahindra’s Alexander Sims out on the spot,
  • Jaguar ‘s Mitch Evans produced a scintillating overtake on DS Techeetah’s Antonio Felix Da Costa around the outside of Beau Rivage as the Kiwi moved into the lead in the closing stages,
  • Audi’s Rene Rast ensured a frustrating day as he crashed out on the exit of Sainte Devote after Virgin’s Nick Cassidy overtook the multiple DTM Champion into turn 1,
  • Virgin’s Robin Frijns took 2nd on the line from Jaguar’s Mitch Evans in a chaotic last lap in Monaco.

Formula E Next Meeting: Puebla E Prix (19th-20th June 2021)

BTCC Thruxton:

Round 1 Results:

  • 1st: Josh Cook (BTC Racing)
  • 2nd: Tom Ingram (Excelr8 Trade Price Cars’s)
  • 3rd: Jake Hill (MB Motorsport)

Highlights:

  • Pole sitter Ash Sutton (Laser Tools Racing) spun off at the just after the first after losing the back end of his Infiniti Q50 after Team BMW’s Colin Turkington clipped the Infiniti Q50 on the opening lap,
  • Team BMW’s Colin Turkington was handed a 17 second time penalty post race following contact with Laser Tools Racing’s Ash Sutton on lap 1,
  • Returnee Gordon Shedden (Honda) crashed out during the race after he tried to avoid a spinning MB Motorsport Ford Focus of Ollie Jackson,
  • BTC Racing’s Dan Cammish finished a surprise 4th following a difficult qualifying.

Race 2 Top 3

  • 1st: Josh Cook (BTC Racing)
  • 2nd: Dan Cammish (BTC Racing)
  • 3rd: Jake Hill (MB Motorsport Accelerated By Blue Square)

Highlights:

  • First lap crash involving Andy Neate, Glynn Geddie and Jade Edwards at turn 1 which caused a red flag,
  • Stephen Jelley (Team BMW) starts on the reverse grid pole.

Race 3 Top 3:

  • 1st: Ash Sutton (Laser Tools Racing)
  • 2nd: Jason Plato (Power Maxed Racing)
  • 3rd: Jake Hill (MB Motorsport Accelerated By Blue Square)

Highlights:

  • Ash Sutton claimed his first race win of the season in Race 3 at Thruxton in changeable conditions,
  • Many drivers including Excelr8’s Trade Price Car’s Tom Ingram and BTC Racing’s Josh Cook were handed penalties for pre race infringements.

  • 1st: Martin Truex Jr (Toyota)
  • 2nd: Kyle Larson (Chevrolet)
  • 3rd: Kyle Busch (Toyota)

Indycar will return for GMR GP at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course on 16th May 2021.
