Motorsport update – 22nd February

Here is this week’s latest motorsport news. 


  • McLaren were at Silverstone last week as drivers, Lando Norris and teammate Daniel Ricciardo performed shakedown laps of the MC35M at the venue. McLaren go into the season with a huge amount of confidence following a strong 2020 season. 
  • Alpha Tauri launched their 2021 challenger, the AT02 on the 19th February 2021 with Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda pulling the covers off the car. 


  • Michael McDowell won the 2021 edition of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. McDowell navigated his way through the debris to claim his maiden win in the sport after 14 years of trying. A huge final lap shunt at turn 4 involved several drivers which included the likes of: Joey Logano. Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch.

Other news: On the 18th February last week, motorsport fans around the world paid tributes to Nascar legend Dale Earnhardt, as 2021 marked 20 years since his death following a huge crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. Dale Earnhardt won the Nascar Winston Cup Series 7 times and also won the 1998 Daytona 500 in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. 

The Daytona International Speedway road course now has a new chicane placed on the front straight to improve safety standards. The chicane was used during the Busch Clash Nascar round.
