Motorsport update – 24th May

Last weekend saw plenty of action. F1 headed to Monaco for the Monaco GP on the streets of Monte Carlo whilst Indycar completed qualifying for next weekend’s Indy 500 whilst Nascar visited the Circuit Of The Americas. 

F1 Monaco GP

Top 5 Drivers 

  • 1st: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) 
  • 2nd: Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) 
  • 3rd: Lando Norris (McLaren) 
  • 4th: Sergio Perez (Red Bull) 
  • 5th: Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) 

Highlights 

  • Drama started before the race as pole sitter Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) did not start the Monaco GP after his car suffered a drive shaft failure and also extensive damage following his qualifying session 3 crash at the swimming pool section, 
  • Mercedes endured a poor Sunday with Valtteri Bottas retiring after a wheel gun Issue during his pitstop whilst his teammate Lewis Hamilton could only manage a 7th place finish,
  • Sebastian Vettel Aston Martin’s best race result of the season with a 5th place finish from 8th on the grid and won driver of the day,
  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull) now takes the lead in the F1 drivers championship after Mercedes struggles as the Dutchman won his 2nd race of the season in Monaco, 
  • Two former Mclaren teammates shared the podium with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the Podium. (Both Mclaren’s of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris ran with the famous Gulf livery in a one off race at Monaco which was inspired by Mclaren’s sportscar grassroots).

Indy 500 Qualifying

Top 3 Qualifiers:

  • 1st: Scott Dixon 
  • 2nd: Colton Herta
  • 3rd: Rinus VeeKay 

The Indy 500 will take place next Sunday on the 30th May 2021 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 

Nascar Cup Series at the Circuit Of The Americas in Austin, Texas

Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Chase Elliot 
  • 2nd: Kyle Larson 
  • 3rd: Joey Logano
