Motorsport update – 29th March

Last weekend saw lots of exciting motor racing action as F1 burst into life in 2021 with round 1 taking place in Bahrain on the full International Circuit layout.

F1:

  • Mercedes took an unlikely win as Sir Lewis Hamilton held of a hard charging Red Bull of Max Verstappen to claim his 96th career win in the sport by just over 7 tenths of a second with Valtteri Bottas third in the other Mercedes.
  • Haas’s Nikita Mazepin endured a forgettable weekend after spinning off at turn 3, which caused a full safety car to be deployed.
  • Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel endured a horrific weekend after he hit the rear of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon at turn 1. Vettel finished the race in fifteenth.
  • Alpine’s Fernando Alonso retired with a brake-by-wire issue,
  • Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda scored his first point’s in F1 in Round 1 with a ninth place finish whilst his temmate, Pierre Gasly hit the rear of Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren which forced the Frenchman to make an early pitstop and drop down the field.

Top 5 drivers from the Bahrain GP:

  • 1st: Sir Lewis Hamilton, (Mercedes)
  • 2nd: Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
  • 3rd: Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) (set fastest lap)
  • 4th: Lando Norris (McLaren)
  • 5th: Sergio Perez (Red Bull) (Perez won driver of the day for finishing P5 after starting from the Pitlane)

Nascar:

Joey Logano took victory at the Food City Dirt Race in Bristol, Tennessee in a Team Penske Ford with Ricky Stenhouse Jr finishing second in the JTG Daughtry Racing Chevrolet and Denny Hamlin in the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota finishing third.
