Gemma Collins supports new fostering campaign
More foster carers are needed than ever before, with 12,500 urgently required across the UK – a 14% increase on 2023 figures. As the number of children entering care rises dramatically, the National Fostering Group is calling for immediate action, urging households with spare rooms to consider fostering.
Gemma Collins and her mum Joan Collins, the “Spare to Share” campaign highlights the 26 million spare bedrooms in homes across England and Wales. While just 1 in 10 people with a spare room say they might consider fostering, the campaign stresses that the need is urgent.
Data from Freedom of Information requests reveals that 60% of local authorities have seen a rise in young people entering care over the past year. Some areas are particularly in need, such as the London Borough of Ealing, which needs 280. The campaign urges households to unlock the potential of their spare rooms and provide vulnerable children with the care they desperately need.
Aston spoke to TV star Gemma Collins, Gemma’s mum Joan Collins and Neil McCarthy, regional director at National Fostering Group.
