Gen Z’s follow in parents and grandparents’ footsteps by accumulating coins

A recent survey by The Royal Mint has revealed that coins are officially the most popular collectable item in the UK, with over a third of collectors having a passion for coins (36%). Stamps (30%) and books (26%) came in second and third most popular respectively.

Millions of people across the globe collect coins for fun, with over half of British collectors beginning their collecting journey with an unusual coin found in their change (54%).

According to the survey results, Gen Z collectors are the most likely demographic to start collecting coins – following in their ancestor’s footsteps – with 43% owning a collection, and 58% increasing their collections over the past 12 months.

To celebrate UK collectors, The Royal Mint is hosting a week of exciting events geared to all – from the most seasoned collectors to those interested in starting a new collection.

Collect Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of coin collecting starting on 20th September 2021.

Aston spoke to Rebecca Morgan, director of collector services at The Royal Mint.
