Iona Bain debunks concerns for first time buying
Young adults are delaying major life milestones such as marriage, children and travel because they cannot afford to get on the housing ladder, new research from Barratt Homes reveals.
Rising house prices are leaving younger generations stuck, with more than a third (36%) admitting that not owning a home is significantly holding them back in life. In London, where the property squeeze is fiercest, only 35% say they have been able to avoid delaying milestones, the lowest figure anywhere in the UK.
Gen Z and Millennials are the hardest hit, with only a minority managing to pursue life plans uninterrupted. One in five Gen Z say they have postponed rites of passage such as travelling, moving out of the family home or even getting a pet. Among Millennials, one in six (16%) admit they have delayed marriage, while the same proportion have put off having their first child.
