Janet Ellis on why we’re leaving a charitable legacy

Kind-hearted people in the UK left gifts in wills to 10,670 different charities last year. That’s the highest number recorded over the past decade.

In fact, there were 37,242 charitable estates in 2021, a 10.7% increase on the number reported for 2020.

This year, the number of charitable estates is on track to potentially reach 42,000 by the end of 2022 – the highest number on record*.

The data, analysed by Smee & Ford, reveals the huge spectrum of charitable causes that are close to people’s hearts, whether it’s researching cures for cancer and dementia; supporting vulnerable children and adults; taking care of pets and animals, and many other worthy causes.

Janet Ellis has partnered with Remember A Charity to reflect on the importance of one’s legacy and how to leave a lasting impact by considering a gift to charity in your will after loved ones have been provided for.
