Konnie Huq launches the 2026 National Innovation Challenge
STEM ambassador, broadcaster, and mother Konnie Huq is backing a national competition designed to equip young people with the skills adults believe will define the next decade.
New research shows over two-fifths (44%) of UK adults believe adapting to new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), will be the most important skill for young people in the next 10 years. More than three-fifths (62%) agree that AI is becoming essential in modern workplaces, giving young people who understand how to use it a clear advantage. Creativity and problem-solving (34%) and critical thinking (31%) are also ranked among the most important future skills for the next generation.
The 2026 National Innovation Challenge aims to bridge that gap. Under the theme “Sustainability and AI”, the competition invites full-time students to “Challenge Your Mind. Change The World.” by developing practical solutions to real industry challenges.
According to Harrow, Richmond, and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC), the creators of the challenge, entries from secondary schools have already nearly doubled compared to last year, with 50 submissions so far. The organisers are on a mission to encourage more colleges and sixth forms to get involved in this year’s edition.
