Listen: dog trainer Graeme Hall: pawsitive resolutions as dogs pile on the pounds
Festive overindulgence has led to dogs piling on the pounds, with many owners slipping on their usual rules, such as not allowing begging at the table (32%) over the Christmas period. But many pet owners are setting strict goals for 2026.
With four-legged friends wearing a few more rolls, our survey has found that owners are setting resolutions to get their beloved pooch back into shape. Positively, almost a third (31%) plan to walk more often, and a quarter (26%) will be opting for longer strolls. But as with all New Year’s resolutions it could all fall by the wayside if owners don’t commit for the long term.
The second Friday in January (9th January) is known as Quitters Day – the point when many New Year’s resolutions start to slip. But while motivation may be fading elsewhere, pet owners are staying committed when it comes to their animals. In 2026, ‘paw-rents’ are determined to stick to their pet resolutions, committing to longer walks, giving fewer treats (24%), trying new activities such as swimming or agility (14%), and introducing more structured training (11%), according to research by Tesco Insurance.
