January has been revealed as the worst time of year for burglaries, according to police data.

In England and Wales January 2023 saw 22,674 burglaries, the highest month since 2020 and 21 per cent more than May 2023 (18,766), the low point for burglaries this year.

Burglaries have peaked in January in four of the past five years, the exception being 2021, when the UK was still in a lockdown.

Whilst the overall number of burglaries is actually on a downward trend, there were 409,000 in the year to March 2023, or one approximately every 80 seconds, according to the figures compiled by Churchill Home Insurance.
