Listen: Glaucoma Awareness Week

Glaucoma Awareness Week 2025 taking place from 30 June to 6 July, is led by Glaucoma UK—the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting people living with glaucoma and raising awareness about the condition. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the UK, affecting around 700,000 people—half of whom remain undiagnosed. Often symptomless, glaucoma can cause irreversible sight loss if
untreated. Early detection is vital, with most diagnoses made during routine eye tests; in fact, 67% of people had no concerns prior to their exam. This year’s campaign encourages people to learn about their risk and emphasizes the importance of regular eye checks.

As part of the campaign, Glaucoma UK has launched an interactive online quiz at glaucoma.uk/risk to help individuals assess their likelihood of developing the condition and receive tailored advice. Beyond public outreach, the charity is also engaging eye care professionals through its “Beyond the Clinic” initiative, ensuring patients know where to turn for support after their appointments. Glaucoma UK offers a wide range of resources to ensure that no one has to face glaucoma alone, reaffirming their commitment to being there for people when and how they need it.

Aston spoke to Chris Hunton from Glaucoma UK.
