Listen: how to prevent gum disease and protect our oral health
Most Brits are familiar with TV adverts telling them not to ignore blood in the sink when they brush their teeth, usually followed by clips of people with missing teeth and warnings about gum disease from a doctor.
Despite the assumption that public awareness around oral health would be improved, the reality is concerning. Data reveals that more than a third of UK adults say they experience bleeding gums at least once a month when they brush their teeth. Yet, rather than seeking advice, the common reaction is simply to brush more softly or ignore the issue altogether.
Whilst talking about gum disease prevention is important in itself, what’s even more worrying is that bleeding gums could signal more than just a dental issue, it may in fact be an early warning sign of type 2 diabetes, a condition that can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
The findings come from Corsodyl, highlighting the importance of treating gum health as more than just a dental concern, but as a vital step in protecting overall health.
Aston spoke to Alastair Lomax, medical & scientific affairs director for oral health at Corsodyl.
