Listen: is new tech production damaging the planet?
While many of us are aware of the positive impact that upcycling clothes, furniture and other items can have on the environment – the same doesn’t seem to apply to technology. New figures have revealed that most Brits are completely unaware that buying new tech has a significant impact on carbon emissions.
When asked which industries people thought contributed the most to greenhouse gases and carbon emissions, new figures from refurbished tech marketplace Back Market showed that the top 3 industries listed were air travel (65%), deforestation (44%) and road transport (39%).
Although all equally important to consider, only 1 in 10 (11%) listed the production of new technology, despite the fact that air travel contributes to 3% of global carbon emissions – just a fraction higher than the production and creation of new technology, which is 2% of that.
Aston spoke to former Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury and Katy Medlock, UK general manager at Back Market.
