Listen: World COPD Day

The 17th of November marks World COPD Day.

The theme this year is “Healthy Lungs – Never More Important” aiming to highlight that the burden of COPD remains, in spite of the ongoing global COVID pandemic. Even in light of COVID, COPD remains a leading cause of death worldwide – so there is never a more important time to focus on lung health.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is estimated to affect 1.2 million in the UK, making it the second most common lung disease, after asthma. Cases of COPD have increased by 27% in the last decade, meaning that more undiagnosed cases are being found, or that the disease is becoming more common.

In a recent study, participants were asked to train using the Breather for 2 sets of 10 breaths, twice a day, for 2 weeks. The study showed that using the Breather increases respiratory muscle strength by 31%, compared to an 8% increase in the control group.

Aston spoke to Nina Bausek, CEO of Luft For Life.
