Matt Allwright on illegal streaming dangers ahead of a big sports weekend

Illegal streaming may seem like an alternative cost-free way to access content, but it comes with serious financial and security risks. Criminals exploit these platforms to steal financial details, install malware, and carry out scams, leaving users vulnerable to fraud, identity theft, and major financial losses. 1 in 4 (24%) scam victims believe they were targeted as a direct result of online piracy, highlighting how widespread the issue is.

New research from BeStreamWise reveals that illegal streamers who fall victim to fraud lose over four times as much money as non-streamers (£5,486 vs. £1,328Additionally, 1 in 10 (13%) illegal streamers have direct evidence that they were scammed because of illegal streaming.

Despite this, many consumers underestimate the dangers. This complacency makes them easy targets for fraud and identity theft. Half of Brits (53%) believe illegal streaming is unlikely to have serious consequences, such as financial loss or personal information being shared without permission, whilst the evidence shows the real reality.
