Millions of hot cross buns set to be wasted this Easter

As Easter arrives, it sees us stock up our cupboards full of chocolate eggs, Easter cakes, and hot cross buns, which can mean we overindulge in these tasty treats over the long weekend.

However, often our eyes can be bigger than our bellies. In fact, on average, we will each buy 4.5 hot cross buns over the Easter weekend and one in five of us will have some leftover, according to the hot cross bun consumption survey by Too Good To Go, the world’s largest surplus food app.

If those leftovers were eaten, we would save 1,835 tonnes of CO2e from being wasted. That is the equivalent of the yearly CO2e emissions of 216 people, or the same as that emitted by 361 flights around the world.

Aston spoke to chef and food waste warrior Paschalis Loucaides to discuss how we can take a bite out of the food waste problem, offer tips on how to make sure no hot cross bun goes uneaten and how we can all do our bit to #SaveOurBuns this Easter using the Too Good To Go app.
