Motorists urged to check their cars ahead of ‘the great Christmas escape’

It’s that time of year when many of us hit the road over the Christmas period, often covering hundreds of miles to make sure we see family – and with rail strikes planned across the Christmas period, it is expected that roads across the UK will be busier than normal.

However, with the Met Office issuing severe weather warnings and with more of us taking to the roads this Christmas, a new report highlights why it is so important for drivers to check their tyre treads ahead of the annual ‘great escape’.

The report, conducted by the Centre for Automotive Industry Research at Cardiff University, and commissioned by Halfords, also found that tyres that are at the legal limit of 1.6mm of tread could increase braking distance by over a THIRD compared to tyres in good condition.
