Motorsport Update (24th August 2020)

27th August 2020
Posted by Gateway 97.8

The weekly motorsport update was back on Gateway 97.8 on Monday 24th August 2020 and it was dominated by the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship which held three races at Oulton Park in Cheshire. Rounds 7, 8 and 9 of the 2020 BTCC season were held on the shorter Oulton Park Island circuit and the wet condtions provided lots entertainment last weekend with plenty of on track action.

Round 7 was race one and the first race was delayed whilst Carl Boardley’s Team Hard BMW 1 Series was recovered after crashing at Lodge. Once the race finally started there was plenty of action with BTC Racing’s Josh Cook winning on the road after recovering from a poor getaway, however there was a change to the race result, post race. The BTC Racing Honda Civic Type R FK8 of Cook was disqualified from the race after failing a post race ride height check. Rory Butcher of Motorbase Performance inherited the win after Josh Cook’s disqualification.

Round 7 Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Rory Butcher (Motorbase Performance)
  • 2nd: Dan Cammish (Halford’s Yuasa Racing)
  • 3rd: Jake Hill (MB Motorsport Accelerated by Blue Square)

Round 8 was Race 2 of the day and 2017 BTCC champion Ash Sutton claimed his second win of the season after he overtook Rory Butcher’s Ford Focus ST MK4 at old hall. BTC Racing’s Josh Cook had a race to forget after collding with his teammate, Micheal Crees at Hislop’s chicane, that’s after Cook tried to pass Chris Smiley’s Excelr8 Hyundai at the same corner.

Round 8 Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Ash Sutton (Laser Tools Racing)
  • 2nd: Rory Butcher (Motorbase Performance)
  • 3rd: Collin Turkington (WSR Team BMW)

Round 9 was the reverse grid race and was won by Carlube Triple R Racing’s Adam Morgan in the Mercedes A Class. The race was red flagged with a couple of laps to go due to a huge crash involving: Stephen Jelley, Nicolas Hamilton and Ollie Brown. All the drivers are okay but their cars have been damaged.

Round 9 Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Adam Morgan (Carlube Triple R Racing)
  • 2nd: Colin Turkington (WSR Team BMW)
  • 3rd: Tom Olliphant (WSR Team BMW)

The next race will be held at Knockhill in Scotland on the 30th August 2020. For more information about the BTCC, visit www.btcc.net for more information on the BTCC. F1 will also be back this weekend with the Belgian GP at Spa on the 28th-30th August 2020.
