Nationwide Building Society awards charities millions in community grants

As we tackle the growing housing shortage, new research by Nationwide Building Society suggests many around the UK are struggling to afford the housing they currently have.

The rising cost of living is causing great financial concern for many at present, but is also changing their outlook on the future, with more than a third* (34%) having lost all hope that they will one day be able to afford to buy a home.

As a result, more than two thirds (69%) think our approach to housing as a society needs to change – believing we should prioritise local people for local housing (46%), provide more council-funded options (44%) and even prevent people from buying second properties (32%).

As part of Nationwide Building Society’s aim of bringing members and colleagues together to find local solutions to the housing crisis, it has awarded £4.7 million to UK charities as part of its 2022 Community Grants programme.

Aston spoke to Rachel Smith, senior manager, social investment at Nationwide Building Society.
