Parenting expert Sue Atkins on modern parenting

Modern parents want their kids to consider them to be their friends – with almost three quarters  (73%) preferring to ‘play and joke’ rather than adopt a stricter style of childcare.

Research out today questioned parents with kids under 16 and those with grown-up kids over 30 to get their take on parenting… and it revealed stark differences in bringing up their children. Almost 9 out of 10 (87%) of today’s parents believe having a playful relationship with their child is good for their mental health. And three quarters don’t expect their child to be on their best behaviour, as they want them to have fun.

However, the survey commissioned by sweet-maker MAOAM, ( pronounced MOW AM) found only 37 per cent of older parents saw their child as a pal when they were growing up. They felt this more casual style of parenting brings children up with a lack of respect (29 per cent) and without boundaries when they grow up (45 per cent). A very strict 3 per cent even admitted a child should be ‘seen and not heard.
