Postal workers at risk from uncontrolled pets

It’s become a comical image – the postal worker being chased off by a barking dog. However, the reality of dog attacks on postmen and women is far from funny, with thousands of incidents every year.

Royal Mail has announced there were 1,673 dog attacks reported on its staff last year, an average of 32 attacks every week across the UK, with some leading to permanent and disabling injuries.

There were 1,673 dog attacks reported last year, compared to 1,690 in 2020/21. Despite the drop, the number of attacks on postal workers still remains too high. In the last year, 32 attacks took place every week across the UK, with some leading to permanent and disabling injuries.

Aston spoke to Phil Graham, global director of safety, health and wellbeing at Royal Mail.
