Retiree personality types revealed

New research set to be published by Audley Group has unveiled the most common personality types of retirees in the UK – revealing how older generations are more adventurous and eager to try new things than many would’ve assumed. And with the popularity of Richard Osman’s ‘The Thursday Murder Club’, it’s perhaps no surprise.

In time for International Day of Older Persons, the survey of 2000 Britons over the age of 55 has
revealed that:

  • The top types of retirees are “The Home Comforter” (41%), who enjoys tending to their garden; The Explorer (27%), who loves to travel and go on adventures; the Family Anchor (26%), who prioritises time with loved ones; and the lifelong learner (18%), who is always picking up new skills.
  • Almost half of those surveyed (46%) said they were starting new hobbies. The most popular were gardening, baking, and arts and crafts, while nearly 1 in 10 (9%) had taken up photography and about 1 in 8 (13%) had started running or walking.
  • 2 in 5 older people (41%) say they actually feel braver than they did in their 20s. But despite this, as many as 98% say they think wider society doesn’t see them as adventurous – with only 7% stating they feel valued and 8% think they’re seen as financially stable or independent.
