Revealed: the questions that children have for people who are blind or visually impaired

As the UK approaches nearly 50% of visually impaired children being enrolled in mainstream schools, a recent survey undertaken by Guide Dogs, of children aged between six and eleven has revealed a genuine and passionate curiosity for the lives of people who are blind or partially sighted people.

Two thirds said they would want to learn more about how guide dogs help people, despite that less than a quarter said they knew someone in the blind and partially sighted community. 43% of children with a visual disability now attend mainstream school rather than a specialist school. It’s a figure that’s increasing year on year.

As part of their effort to bust stigmas and misconceptions around sight loss in young people, Guide Dog’s Siobhan Meade and her guide dog Marty visited Kingston Primary School in Benfleet, to answer the pupil’s questions.

Aston spoke to Siobhan Meade.
