Small amount of girls will play sport this summer

Despite the Lionesses being hailed as heroes and celebrated across the country for the success in this summer’s Women’s Euros tournament, only 12% of young girls plan on playing sport this summer.

That’s according to new research from healthcare charity Nuffield Health, which has also revealed 48% feel embarrassed when playing sports or exercising, compared to just 28% of boys.

Worryingly, more than a quarter (28%) say exercise is not important to them, while parents anticipate their daughters will spend between four and seven days at home every week during the summer holidays.

In response to this, Nuffield Health aims to fill the gap in activity over the holidays through the Move Together programme – offering fun, inclusive, and free exercise classes at 114 sites across the UK.

Aston spoke to Davina Deniszcyc, medical director at Nuffield Health.
