Staying connected with loved ones this Christmas

It is estimated that around 4.7 million Brits spend Christmas and the New Year abroad each year. And with the rise in extreme heat across popular tourist destinations this past summer, many will be looking at winter travel as an alternative. In fact, data shows that bookings are up 16% year-on-year.

But whether you opt for a family holiday, a couple’s trip away, or even solo travel, staying connected with loved ones at Christmas is a key part of the festivities. You’d forgive a quarter (27%) of Brits then for worrying about racking up data roaming charges when abroad – especially after the recent news of Scottish Health Secretary, Michael Matherson, doing just that, to the tune of £11,000. And when only 20% definitively know how much their plan actually costs them whilst travelling, and even less (18%) are confident they understand how Brexit has affected charges, you can appreciate the concern.

It is a shame, then, that the UK public is so unaware of eSIM technology. In fact, just 17% know how they work and only 12% say they have been told about them by their network providers – which is perhaps no surprise, given that an eSIM allows travellers to conveniently switch to a local network and potentially save a substantial amount of money, instead of paying rising roaming charges.

Aston spoke to Jessica Hall from eSIM.net.
