Supporting our unpaid carers through the cost-of-living crisis

One in three unpaid carers is now spending ‘significantly’ more than last year looking after loved ones, due to the rising cost of living – with the majority (71 per cent) even going as far as to say that managing the current cost of living crisis has been one of the toughest things they have faced as a carer.

They found that on average unpaid carers have spent over £400 this year on things like changing the lightbulbs to LEDs (49 per cent), bleeding radiators (42 per cent), having the boiler serviced (35 per cent) and getting better quality curtains (36 per cent).

The survey from Smart Energy GB & Carers UK highlights that it is not just the costs which are rising but the number of time carers is having to spend helping loved ones prepare for this winter.

Aston spoke to Madeleine Starr MBE from Carers UK and Philippa Brown from Smart Energy GB.
