The Bill’s Graham Cole OBE in fight against injustice

NARPO is demanding the government end the unfair pension rules that strip police widows and widowers of their financial security if they find love again.

  • Army widows keep their pensions for life.
  • Police widows in Northern Ireland and Scotland have fairer protections.
  • Police officers risk their lives just as soldiers do—yet their families face financial penalties in England and Wales.

NARPO wants a fair and consistent approach across the UK.

In 2015, changes to Police Pension Regulations created a postcode lottery for widows and widowers. Those in Northern Ireland keep their pensions regardless of relationship status. In Scotland, survivors of officers who died on duty retain their pensions. But in England and Wales, many face financial loss simply for moving on with their lives.

In 2022, NARPO’s legal challenge was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, but the fight continues.
