It turns out that money CAN buy you happiness, but perhaps not in the way you might think. Research commissioned by The National Lottery claims spending quality time with family makes us happiest, ahead of any list of expensive new experiences or worldly goods.

The survey showed that lottery winners happiness increased because their win enabled them to spend more time with family. Providing for family, looking after older family members and making provisions for the younger generation added to their joy as did treating friends.

People questioned claimed experiences were more important to their happiness than buying things, but they’d still value learning a new hobby ahead of any one-off bucket list experience.

Aston spoke to Nik and Eva Speakman a.k.a The Speakmans, British therapists and life coaches to discuss the research and also what national lottery winners are more likely to spend their winnings on.
