UK’s love affair with Jamaica

There’s something about Jamaica that holds a special place in the hearts of Brits across the UK – from Usain Bolt’s 100-meter record breaking sprint and the famous Bobsleigh team to Reggae and Jerk chicken- to those infamous rum cocktails and fantastic beaches.

More than 800,000 people of Jamaican descent live in the UK and the country has had a massive impact on world culture and this week celebrates 60 years of independence. It coincides with the Commonwealth Games and the Jamaican tourism board is  inviting the UK to party with them as part of a global tour to mark ‘Jamaica 60’, the 60th anniversary of independence ( 6th August 2022) in Jamaica.  Jamaica has been a popular holiday destination for Hollywood’s elite and celebrities since the 1950s. Famous former residents include Johnny Cash, Noel Coward, Errol Flynn and Ian Fleming. Fleming wrote the classic James Bond novels in Jamaica at his home, Goldeneye, now a world-class resort.

Aston spoke to the director of tourism for Jamaica Donovan White.
