Unsung local heroes saving our communities in challenging times

The concept of British community could be under threat, according to a new white paper. Research has revealed less than a quarter (24%) of Brits believe the notion of community is alive and well in the UK, with 60% placing the blame on Brexit and 72% highlighting a lack of funding by the government.

The white paper report, commissioned by mobile phone network giffgaff, found challenging times unite the country – three quarters of people (72%) said they believe it’s never been more important for communities to support those in need. Nationally, the report found there isn’t a strong sense of community, but locally it’s a more positive story with around half (41%) saying there is – rising to 56% in rural areas who say they’re engaged with their local area.

Today, winners of The Community Projects are being announced. The Community Projects is a campaign that will fund and support local community heroes and initiatives. Winners were selected on behalf of giffgaff by a panel of judges including Bobby Kasanga – an ex London gang member and founder of London’s leading community football club Hackney Wick FC.

Aston spoke to Bobby Kasanga, Ex London gang member and founder of London’s leading community football club Hackney Wick FC to discuss the research and they also spoke about some of winners of community projects scheme for 2019.
