Why Brits aren’t leaving luck to chance
From saluting magpies, opening umbrellas indoors through to unwashed socks and “lucky pants” pulled out for big occasions, Britain has a funny relationship with luck. Whether it’s avoiding certain phrases, touching wood, or sticking with a favourite outfit, many of us quietly rely on superstition when the stakes feel high.
New research from The National Bingo Game reveals that more than a third (38%) of Brits own at least one lucky item, with clothing emerging as the nation’s most trusted good-luck charm (26%).
It’s not just underwear Brits are clinging to. The research reveals that 14% rely on a lucky necklace, keep photos of loved ones on them during important moments (13%), and swear by crystals (12%) and coins (11%) – believing these everyday items quietly tip luck in their favour.
