Why dads still feel ‘nervous’ asking for time off to care for their children
A study of 5,000 employed fathers found 74 per cent want to fully embrace equal parenting – but still feel there is a stigma around them taking time off work.
More than two in 10 (21 per cent) have even been asked “where’s your wife/partner?” in response to requesting flexibility to fulfil childcare duties.
While 20 per cent have been questioned on the real urgency of the request and 19 per cent have been asked to arrange alternative care.
Working Families commissioned the research in partnership with Wates and Parenting Out Loud, supported by Dad Shift and The Fatherhood Institute.
Aston spoke to Jane van Zyl, CEO of Working Families.
