Would you pass your theory test today?

The driving theory test was introduced nearly three decades ago in 1996, marking a pivotal shift in ensuring road safety by assessing candidates’ knowledge of driving rules and regulations.

However, the pass rates for the theory test have consistently declined since the 2008/09 period, with pass rates plummeting from 65.4% in 2007/08 to the current concerning low of 45% in 2023/24.

One prominent issue lies in the challenge of preparing for the hazard perception component of the theory test. The AA Driving School, which has launched a theory test revision app, has commissioned new research which shows a third of adults who have failed their theory tests (33%) found mastering hazard perception to be the most daunting aspect of their preparation.

Aston spoke to Camilla Benitz, managing director of AA Driving School.
