Are UK pet shelters feeling the strain?
Despite pets playing an increasingly crucial role in supporting the mental wellbeing of the nation, tens of thousands of dogs and cats remain without homes in UK shelters.
It is estimated that 63,800 dogs and 75,300 cats currently live in UK shelters, with rising numbers of pets being surrendered due to cost-of-living pressures and behavioural challenges.
New figures found that the majority (87%) of UK pet owners say their pet has improved their mental wellbeing, while almost 7 in ten (68%) credit their pet with helping them stop overthinking or worrying, according to figures by Mars and Calm. A third (32%) even say their dog or cat is the most important thing in their lives, thanks to the company and unconditional love they provide.
With shelters near capacity and animal welfare organisations warning of a growing crisis, this global Global Adoption Weekend (3rd-6th October) charities are urging the public to consider adoption over purchase when bringing a new pet into their lives.
