David Burton-Sampson MP on Black History Month

Gateway is featuring inspirational people all this month from an Afro-Caribbean background as part of Black History Month.

This week on Drivetime, Ros Connors spoke with the man who was the first ever black mayor in Essex, Basildon’s very own David Burton-Sampson. David, who is from a mixed race family and who is also openly gay, is the spearhead of Basildon Pride. He furthered his political career by becoming the Labour candidate for Southend-West and Leigh in last year’s General Election.

He won the seat from Anna Firth in what had previously been the constituency of murdered MP Sir David Amess – and a Conservative stronghold. David reflects on his life long journey bringing us up to date as the current Member of Parliament for Southend-West and Leigh.

Here’s Ros’s interview with David Burton-Sampson MP.
