Dr Hilary Jones on the weight loss jab era

Britain is entering a new phase of the weight loss jab era.

The first wave was access. The second wave focused on rapid results. Now attention is turning to sustainability and what happens when treatment stops.

Recent estimates suggest around 1.5 million UK adults are using GLP-1 medications to lose weight. As uptake grows, GPs are increasingly seeing a new challenge emerge. Patients who discontinue treatment without structured nutritional and lifestyle support can regain weight quickly, sometimes exceeding their original weight, while also losing muscle mass and strength in the process.

New research commissioned by Gousto suggests the public recognises this gap. More than 40% of adults say there is insufficient guidance available on how to eat healthily after coming off weight loss medication. Nearly half believe the UK food system is failing people trying to improve their health.
