Keeping your home safe from prying eyes this winter

Your home is your castle. A place of refuge and safety. We all want to rest easy knowing our home is secure, keeping our family and belongings safe and sound. But as the nights draw in and winter approaches, our homes are left standing empty in the dark, providing opportunistic criminals who see a dark house as a chance to commit a burglary.

New research from EE has today revealed that over 12.7 million Britons plan to take up a smart home security product in the future to protect themselves and their homes.

Opportunity plays a big role in enabling burglar to commit a crime as they look for homes that seem unoccupied or have little or no obvious security. In fact, being burgled (43%) is the crime that Brits fear most.

Now that we’re back at school and work, out socialising, and travelling once more, our homes are left unattended for long stretches. However, the research highlights some of the cunning tactics Brits are using to deter burglars. Asking a neighbour to keep an eye on your home (57%) is the most popular method, followed by leaving the lights on (47%) and asking a neighbour to park their car in your drive (28%).

Ryan spoke to security expert Will Geddes.
