Listen: are mislabelled items causing an allergic reaction?

Over half of people with food allergies (56%) have had an allergic reaction due to mislabelled or unclear food packaging, with nearly a quarter (23%) suffering multiple reactions.

The data from GS1 UK, the not-for-profit organisation behind the barcode, reveals this could be down to dangerous food labelling practices in the UK. Examples include unclear and inaccurate labelling, ambiguous phrases like ‘may contain nuts’ and a worrying lack of legislation.

As a result, 56% of Brits with allergies say they have had an allergic reaction from mislabelled or unclear food packaging.

Johnny spoke to Sarah Atkins, chief marketing officer at GS1 UK.
