Listen: how to protect yourself from phone theft
Britain is now Europe’s phone‑theft capital, with a crisis across the country.
Driven by gangs on bikes and mopeds, the figures show the UK accounts for well over a third (39%) of all phone theft claims across Europe, and London alone is responsible for nearly a fifth (16%) of the continent’s thefts. That number translates to around 80,000 thefts a year in the capital (220 a day) commanding a street value estimated to be as much as £70m.
This isn’t just a London problem either. Towns and cities across the UK are all becoming hotspots. Yorkshire police alone recorded nearly 2000 incidents of the crime over a 12-month period, with Kent and Lancashire not far behind.
